Georgetown Encourages Residents to Recycle Holiday Waste with Special Programs

Georgetown Residents: Make the Most of Holiday Recycling This Season!

The festive season often brings with it a whirlwind of joy, family gatherings, and, let’s face it, a bit of extra waste. But here in the charming city of Georgetown, Texas, you don’t have to toss that holiday waste into the trash! The city has a host of fantastic recycling options to help you clean up without adding to the landfill. So, get ready to deck the halls and recycle responsibly this season!

Holiday String Light Recycling

Starting December 2nd, Georgetown residents can participate in a special holiday string light recycling program in partnership with Texas Disposal Systems. This service is free and runs through January 31st! Got those old, tangled string lights? Don’t let them gather dust in your garage; drop them off at one of four designated collection stations around the city.

It’s essential to remember that this program only accepts holiday string lights. Please don’t toss them into your regular recycling bins, as they can wreak havoc on the sorting equipment. Unfortunately, yard decorations, inflatables, and any other types of festive lighting won’t be collected through this program. Last year, Georgetown made quite a splash by recycling an impressive 5,380 pounds of string lights. Let’s see if we can beat that this year!

Christmas Tree Curbside Pick-Up

Once the holidays are over, it’s time to remove that Christmas tree from your living room. But don’t fret, Georgetown has your back! If you’re a Texas Disposal Systems customer, simply put your Christmas tree at the curb for pickup on your regular yard trimmings collection day. Trees that measure seven feet or shorter can be left whole. However, if your tree is taller than that, please chop it into sections, and make sure it’s free of all decorations—yes, that means lights, garland, and ornaments!

So, when’s your collection day? Georgetown residents can find this information using the Waste Wizard on Texas Disposal Systems’ website. And just a quick heads up: Collection days will be shifted by one day during Christmas and New Year’s! So, plan accordingly to keep your neighborhood looking spruce.

Recycling Boxes and Wrapping Paper

After all that unwrapping, you might find yourself left with a mountain of cardboard boxes and plain wrapping paper. Good news—they’re recyclable too! If your recycling cart is full, just place those materials inside a larger box next to your cart for pick-up. However, keep in mind that embellished wrapping paper, foil, ribbons, and bows are not recyclable. And for those pesky plastic bags, you can recycle them by using a yellow bag designated for such materials—just tie them up and toss them in your recycling cart!

Drop-off for Christmas Trees

If curbside pickup isn’t your thing, don’t worry! Georgetown also offers a drop-off for Christmas trees at the City Transfer Station from January 2nd to January 31st. It’s a great way to get rid of your tree at no cost. Just remember—artificial trees aren’t accepted, and trees must be stripped of any decorations!

Transfer Station Hours

The Transfer Station operates from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Just a quick note: it will be closed on certain holidays, including November 28, December 25, and January 1.

For any questions or to learn more about these fantastic recycling programs, you can reach out to Texas Disposal Systems at 512-930-1715 or hop online to Georgetown’s official recycling site. So gear up, gather all that holiday waste, and let’s make this season not only jolly but also eco-friendly!
