Round Rock Commemorates Lives Lost with a Sea of Flags

ROUND ROCK, Texas – As we approach the solemn anniversary of September 11th, a beautiful yet poignant tribute has been set up at Yonders Point in Old Settlers Park. Here in Williamson County, a jaw-dropping display of 4,000 American flags stands tall, each representing a life lost—not only on that tragic day but also in combat in the years since. This breathtaking sight serves to remind us of the countless sacrifices made for our freedom.

A Labor of Love

Angela Withrow, one of the dedicated volunteers who helped bring this memorial to life, shared her thoughts about the meaning behind the flags. “It’s not just a flag,” Angela emphasized. “It’s not just, you know, a day. It’s remembering that there were people that wore those shoes, and they fought for our country, and they gave their life.” It’s clear that the flags hold a deeper significance than just fabric on a pole; they are symbols of bravery and selflessness.

The Vision Behind the Memorial

At the helm of this inspiring project is Bobby Withrow, the founder of Texas Fallen Project Inc. “We started out putting a flag for each of the fallen from 9/11; 2,978 people, and then we added roughly 800 Texans lost in combat,” he explained. This added up to a rounded total of 4,000 flags, a stunning visual representation of lives forever changed.

Bobby’s commitment to this memorial started a few years ago, and each year he continues this tradition with heartfelt dedication to pay tribute to our fallen servicemen and women.

A Family Affair

Among the visitors to the memorial was Debbie Sullivan, who came with her husband and grandson. She expressed a sentiment that many of us share, “We have kids now that are born after this all happened and don’t even know what happened to our country. It was such a somber day, and to memorialize it like this is beautiful.” It is indeed a beautiful—and necessary—reminder of the past for younger generations who may not fully grasp the significance of this day.

Remembering to Remember

The striking display serves as more than just a tribute; it is a powerful reminder of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our safety and freedom. “If we forget it, we’re doomed to repeat it,” Bobby added thoughtfully. His words echo a profound truth that many carry in their hearts, emphasizing the need to remember and learn from our history.

An Invitation to All

Everyone is welcome to visit this moving memorial at Yonders Point. It will remain open through September 11th, inviting all to take a moment to reflect and honor those who have given so much. The sight of those flags, waving gently in the wind, serves as a touching reminder that we are not just remembering a day—but cherishing the lives and sacrifices of countless individuals who stood strong for our nation.

As we approach this solemn date, let’s take a moment to reflect on the significance of the lives represented by each flag and carry forward their legacy of bravery and sacrifice in our hearts. This memorial is not just a tribute; it’s a heartfelt call to remember and appreciate the freedoms we hold dear.
