Hey Chicago, it’s been a rollercoaster of a summer for our very own Angel Reese. Just when we were all getting pumped to see her in action for the rest of the WNBA season, the Sky forward dropped some unfortunate news: she will miss the rest of the season due to a pesky wrist injury. Talk about a bummer! Reese announced this news on Saturday. Her injury happened during a game against the Los Angeles Sparks, and now, we’re left wondering what could have been.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate what a stellar rookie season Reese had, though! Even with this injury, she’s still going down in history. With a jaw-dropping total of 446 rebounds, she’s set a new WNBA record for the most single-season rebounds by any player. Yep, you heard that right. That’s not just for rookies – that’s for everyone! The only player who could possibly catch her is A’ja Wilson from the Las Vegas Aces, but that’s a long shot since Wilson currently has 406 rebounds with only a handful of games left.
And it doesn’t stop there. Reese has also set new records for consecutive double-doubles, hitting 10 in a row, and she finished with a whopping total of 26 double-doubles this season. If she’d gotten a few more games in, we might even be talking about her breaking the record held by Alyssa Thomas, which is currently 28. Girl has been on fire!
In her heartfelt announcement, Reese reflected on her journey saying, “What a year. I never would have imagined the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they will be seeing more of in Year 2 lol🥲” She sounds both proud and a bit heartbroken, which is totally understandable. She continued, “Through it all, I have showed that I belong in this league even when no one else believed.” Talk about some serious resilience!
Even though she won’t be on the court, Reese reassured fans that they’ll still see her being the biggest cheerleader from the sidelines. She’s filled with gratitude and has her eyes set on getting a much-needed physical and mental break. Sounds like a smart move, especially after the whirlwind of a season she’s had.
Now, despite having one of the best rookie seasons ever, we can’t talk about Reese without mentioning the Rookie of the Year race. It’s getting intense! Many fans are rallying behind Caitlin Clark as well, who’s making her own mark this season. Some folks think Clark has a solid grip on the award, especially since she’ll have more games to boost her stats. Still, with all that Reese has accomplished, she’s definitely a strong contender. The hype around her and Clark is something else; it’s like a thrilling showdown brewing.
In the midst of all this, let’s not forget that the Chicago Sky are currently sitting at a 12-22 record. But with Reese proving she’s a game-changer, we believe there are brighter days ahead for our team! Her rookie season has set the stage for what’s to come. Fans are excited, and you can bet we’re all looking forward to Year 2 and watching Reese continue to grow as one of the top players in the league.
So here’s to Angel Reese and her inspiring season, despite how it ended. Her journey is just getting started, and we can all feel the excitement for what’s next in her basketball story. Until then, let’s keep cheering for our Sky in true Chicago fashion!
