AUSTIN, Texas — The recent shuttering of Hail Specialists Auto Body and Collision in North Austin has left many residents scrambling for answers about their vehicles and repair costs. As customers express their frustrations, it seems like a nightmare has unfolded for those who entrusted their cars to this now-closed shop.
In May, we first learned about the woes faced by customers of Hail Specialists. From tales of months-long delays to allegations of ballooning repair costs and unreasonable storage fees, it was clear something was amiss. Now, with the shop permanently closed, many customers like Sefria Ricks and Erica Michaud are left without their cars and feeling hopeless.
“I never received my car back,” Ricks lamented. Michaud echoed similar sentiments, saying, “I personally never saw my truck again.” It’s a feeling shared by others, including Christal Byrns, who is searching for answers about her son’s vehicle: “Why can’t you give us the car?” she asked, clearly distressed.
For many, the problems started after significant hailstorms battered the Austin area, causing an unprecedented $600 million worth of damages in September 2023. Customer complaints about Hail Specialists revealed a troubling pattern: after vehicles were dropped off for repairs, the wait times were excessive, and the costs kept increasing. Customers like Ernesto and Cheryl Ojeda shared their disbelief. “Did they give you any indication that it would take six months?” they were asked. “No. No ma’am,” they shot back, frustration palpable in their voices.
The frustrations didn’t stop there. More customers began reaching out, revealing that several had filed lawsuits against Hail Specialists—many alleging the shop was holding their vehicles hostage for crippling storage fees. In the last days of its operation, Hail Specialists had its front gate chained and locked, leaving customers feeling abandoned and betrayed.
Take, for example, the case of the Vastano family. They felt their experience was riddled with “gross unprofessionalism.” What started as a simple repair process for their Honda HRV turned into an uphill battle with accusations of steeply escalating costs. “Our repair estimate started at $5,262. Then a month later, it jumped to nearly $10,000,” Joe Vastano explained incredulously. Their claims included charges for repairing a windshield that wasn’t even damaged in the hailstorm. It left them feeling powerless as they faced demands for payment in order to reclaim their car, which they still haven’t seen seven months later.
Others, like Marie Lee and Ricks, recounted similarly troubling stories about unexpected fees. Lee discovered that charges were accumulating for daily moving of her car during repairs; she had no idea these fees even existed. Meanwhile, Ricks shared that she was confronted with a staggering $300 per day charge that quickly accumulated, leading to her car being totaled by her insurance.
As the situation unfolded, many customers expressed their anguish not just over the loss of their vehicles, but also over the lack of communication from the shop. Some, like Christal Byrns, were left in the dark about the status of their cars since March, struggling to understand the demands for exorbitant fees when their insurance simply cut off payments due to rising costs.
Austin police have reported that they are looking into complaints of “auto theft” against the shop. However, officers also noted the challenge of handling what is essentially a civil matter since customers aren’t necessarily criminally defrauded, but rather caught up in a business dispute.
Many customers, exasperated yet determined, want to share their experiences to warn future car owners about the potential pitfalls of auto body shops. “It was devastating,” Ricks confessed. “It was a traumatic experience,” added Michaud. This collective voice of warning could potentially have a ripple effect, ensuring that others in Austin are cautious when choosing a repair shop.
As the mysteries surrounding Hail Specialists continue to unfold, affected customers can only hope for a resolution—whether it be their vehicles’ return or compensation for the emotional and financial toll this ordeal has taken.
