Bartlett ISD Tackles Growth Challenges with New Funding Initiatives
In the charming town of Bartlett, Texas, the local school district is rolling up its sleeves and getting to work on some exciting changes. Bartlett Independent School District (ISD) is initiating steps to secure new grants and loans after inflation and recent storms have taken a toll on their funding from a bond project approved last May. This project was designed to support the anticipated growth in the area, updating some of the district’s older facilities along the way.
Modernizing and Renovating Older Facilities
Superintendent Teddy Clevenger is passionate about improving the learning environment for students. “We’ve got buildings from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, and even the ’90s,” he explains. Many of these structures are in need of serious renovations. With the Samsung Facility opening in nearby Taylor by 2026, along with other developments, Bartlett ISD is preparing to welcome more students, and they want to ensure the facilities are up to date.
Part of this exciting initiative includes renovating a vacant Middle School building that has sat empty for up to 20 years. This renovation will create dedicated space for middle school students, allowing for a smoother transition from the current high school setup. “They will have their own building so we can prepare for growth,” Clevenger assures.
Transformations in Progress
In addition to the Middle School renovations, Bartlett ISD has big plans for their cafeteria. The existing cafeteria will soon be transformed into a series of new classrooms and offices, which will also become the new entrance of the school. The district is not stopping there; a new cafeteria is being built that will accommodate up to 550 students, making it a bustling hub for students during lunch hours.
Sports enthusiasts will also have something to cheer about, as the district is in the process of building new football, baseball, and softball stadiums, along with an impressive eight-lane track. Moreover, the district is investing in a new agriculture facility that will include a large welding and woodworking shop, an animal barn, and a show arena. It’s undoubtedly a time of growth and opportunity in Little Bartlett.
Addressing Infrastructure Needs
One of the most critical infrastructural issues being tackled is drainage. After facing significant flooding earlier this year, the district recognized the need for an upgraded drainage system. “I’m happy to say that that drainage plan is live now,” Clevenger notes. “We’ve put in the drainage that we need all throughout the district.” This proactive measure is essential to ensure the community is better prepared for future weather events.
Facing Funding Challenges
Despite these ambitious plans, Bartlett ISD is facing some financial hurdles. The $20 million bond approved by voters last May isn’t quite enough to cover all the expenses associated with the various projects. Clevenger explained that the total costs are now projecting to be around $28-29 million. To make up the difference, they are actively seeking loans and grants. “Some of these things we have to save for phase two,” he observed.
The initial phase of renovations and updates is expected to be completed by August 2025, a date that marks a major milestone for the district.
Health and Wellness Initiatives
As if all of that wasn’t enough, Bartlett ISD is also prioritizing health and wellness this year with a new program called Bulldog Balance: A Year of Wellness. This initiative aims to educate students, teachers, and staff on various health topics ranging from human trafficking awareness to maintaining physical and mental well-being. Clevenger believes that taking care of oneself is paramount for educators who strive to care for their students and the community.
With speakers and health professionals lined up to discuss important topics, including posture and breathing, and even offering cutting-edge medical imaging for early illness detection, the commitment to health is truly a community-focused initiative.
