Texas Department of Criminal Justice and City of Bartlett Announce Reopening of Bartlett Unit

BARTLETT, Texas

In a major move developed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the city of Bartlett in Williamson County, the Bartlett Unit formerly known as Bartlett State Jail, is scheduled to reopen. The decision stems from increased prison population and the necessity for more beds.

TDCJ and the city of Bartlett clarified that the Bartlett Unit was closed in 2017 due to declining inmate numbers. According to TDCJ Executive Director Bryan Collier, this significant decision will achieve two things; “The Barlett Unit will not only enhance public safety by providing secure housing for inmates but also contribute to the economic growth of the community.”

A New Approach and Economic Development

The Bartlett Unit is projected to accommodate 1,049 inmates, championing a new approach to programs and services for successful rehabilitation and reintegration post-release. The move is further expected to catalyze economic improvements for the city of Bartlett, particularly through job creation.

“The Barlett Unit opening will bring a significant boost to our local economy by offering much-needed jobs, from corrections officers to support staff,” Mayor of Bartlett, Chad Mees said.

Hiring Event and Reopening Date

The Bartlett Unit will host a hiring event later this month. According to information released by the TDCJ, the event will run on both the 23rd and 24th of July at 1018 Arnold Dr, Bartlett, Texas 76511. The Unit is expected to commence operations in early October 2024.

Citizens are looking forward to the reopening, as this move will facilitate additional public safety and generate new occupations. The reopening of Bartlett Unit resonates with commitment to community development and symbolizes growth.
