An artistic representation of the upcoming Burnet Middle School renovation showcasing the integration of modern design and historical elements.
Burnet Middle School in North Central Austin is set for a significant renovation starting this summer, aimed at creating a modern educational environment. This project will introduce a new four-story building to accommodate 1,100 to 1,300 students by the 2027-2028 school year, addressing current infrastructure issues and emphasizing wellness and educational offerings. The renovation, backed by a 2022 bond package, will preserve elements of the school’s history while enhancing the learning experience for future generations.
The vibrant community of North Central Austin is buzzing with excitement as Burnet Middle School gears up for a major renovation that promises to bring a state-of-the-art facility to its students and staff! The new construction project is set to break ground this summer, with an anticipated opening in time for the 2027-2028 school year.
Currently, Burnet Middle School stands proudly with its modest brick structures that were built way back in the late 1950s. Designed by architect J. Roy White, the school was once a modern marvel of its time with its large windows inviting natural light into classrooms. However, it has steadily become apparent that the existing facilities are in dire need of an upgrade.
With a host of issues plaguing the infrastructure, including a problematic HVAC system that was retrofitted due to the original building lacking air conditioning, the Austin Independent School District (AISD) has determined that the time for change has come. To make the learning environment more conducive to education, a comprehensive Educational Suitability Summary Report highlighted several deficiencies, including rooftop, mechanical, and electrical issues that need addressing.
Under the new plans, the school will undergo a complete transformation. This exciting renovation will see a brand-new, four-story building rise from the ground, expanding the overall space by a whopping 88,000 square feet! With the capacity to accommodate 1,100 to 1,300 students, the new facility will increase enrollment capabilities significantly above the nearly 800 students it housed during the 2022-2023 school year.
One of the most thrilling aspects of this project is its focus on wellness and comprehensive educational offerings. The redesigned building will include dedicated spaces for mental health, wellness, fine arts, and career and technical education. Think of it—a place where every student’s needs can be met, all under one roof!
While accolades are destined to be heaped upon the slick new building, the architects also plan to honor the school’s rich history. Original bricks from the current structure will be reused, and elements like metal-covered walkways will be replicated, ensuring that the past is thoughtfully blended into the future. Construction will take place on what is currently an outdoor athletic field, meaning disruption will be kept at a minimum while students carry on with their education.
Once completed, the existing buildings will be demolished to pave the way for new outdoor learning spaces and athletic facilities that can help cultivate a holistic educational experience. This project is part of a grand effort that includes 25 modernization projects throughout the Austin Independent School District, underscoring the commitment to providing students with an environment that inspires and functions seamlessly.
The funding for this significant transformation comes from a 2022 bond package aimed at modernizing facilities across the district. The old adage goes, “build it, and they will come.” In this case, it looks like Burnet Middle School is preparing to welcome a fresh wave of students, eager to learn and thrive in a new space designed to meet their needs.
As the community prepares for these exciting developments at Burnet Middle School, parents, teachers, and students alike are filled with anticipation, wholeheartedly embracing the transformation that awaits. The countdown has begun, and by 2027-2028, Burnet Middle School will proudly showcase a magnificent new facility that lays the groundwork for education in a modern world. Bring it on, Burnet Middle School!
