Central Texas Cities Dominate State List for Most Expensive Senior Assisted Living
In what may come as a shock to some, but perhaps not to others, three cities in Central Texas have topped the list for the most expensive senior assisted living accommodations in Texas. The results, based on a comprehensive study by Seniorly, reveals that Georgetown, Austin, and Round Rock rank among the top seven costliest cities in this category, with Georgetown taking the top spot not only in the state but it also ranks 43rd nationwide.
Soaring Costs in Senior Care
Speaking about the skyrocketing costs, Marlena del Hierro, Vice President of partnerships and commercial strategy at Seniorly, shared her insights saying: “Because of inflation, you’re looking at the cost of everything”, del Hierro hints at the rising expenses of necessities such as caregiving and daily commodities like milk, emphasizing the need for families to be well-informed and prepared.
It’s not just about living costs, but real estate as well. “The real estate in Georgetown, the real estate in certain areas can be higher amounts than certain areas in Austin… if Georgetown, for example, they’re full and they don’t have as many options like Austin would, there would be a cost increase” del Hierro added.
The High Price of Aging
The high cost of senior living resonates with many families in Texas, including Serita Lacasse, the Executive Director of Senior Access. “The cost of living for seniors is kind of out of control right now,” Lacasse reveals. Senior Access is an organization that aids Central Texas seniors with free transport services for their essentials like doctor’s appointments and grocery shopping, helping them stay in their homes as long as possible.
Lacasse’s personal experience mirrors that of many residents in Texas. Following the passing of her father two years ago, her mother transitioned to assisted living. “It’s a whirlwind,” Lacasse discloses, stressing the importance of seeking help in such times. “Don’t think you can just do it all by yourself,” she advises, “It’s okay to ask for help.”
Support for Seniors
Besides Senior Access, other organizations that provide support to seniors in Williamson County include Faith in Action and A Place for Mom. Such community resources can provide invaluable assistance for families navigating the complexities of senior care and financial planning.
The high cost of senior care, sadly, is not a problem confined to Central Texas alone. It is a growing issue faced by many other urban areas nationwide. As such, this study serves as a poignant reminder of the need for families to plan ahead and make well-informed decisions.
As the Central Texas cities top the list for the most expensive senior assisted living forums in the state, the communities face the challenge of creating more affordable living options. The high costs stress the need for collaborative efforts from policymakers, communities, and families alike, to ensure quality and affordable care for seniors.
