Round Rock and Austin residents can take part in festive recycling programs for their Christmas trees, promoting sustainability and keeping trees out of landfills. Round Rock is hosting recycling events throughout December and January, while Austin offers drop-off options at Zilker Park and curbside composting. Both cities aim to turn collected trees into mulch for residents. Additionally, Round Rock Sports Center is expanding with two new courts by 2026 as part of a $274 million plan to meet growing sports needs.
As the holiday season winds down, residents of Round Rock and Austin have an exciting opportunity to start the New Year by taking part in festive recycling programs for their Christmas trees! In an effort to promote sustainability and keep these joyful coniferous trees out of landfills, both cities are stepping up with great options for tree disposal over the next couple of months.
In Round Rock, the city is all set to host a series of Christmas tree recycling events throughout December and January. This initiative invites residents to bring their natural trees for recycling, ensuring that every part of the tree is put to good use. Residents can clear out their holiday decor without worrying about trashing their beloved trees!
If you live in *Austin*, you’re in luck too! The city is offering convenient options for getting rid of your Christmas tree. Residents can drop off their natural trees, as well as wreaths and garlands, at the beautiful Zilker Park. The designated drop-off hours are from 10 am to 2 pm on December 28, January 4, and January 5, where you can easily recycle those holiday decorations.
But that’s not all! If you’re a resident with curbside composting, you can set your tree out on your collection day by 5:30 am. This means your tree can be collected right from your front yard.
All trees collected at Zilker Park will eventually be transformed into mulch, which will be available for residents starting January 8 at 9 am. Please remember that this mulch will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early to snag your share! If you’re planning to take some home, you might want to bring your own tools and containers to make transporting easier.
Additionally, for those who are looking for more tree drop-off locations, there are plenty of other nearby free options available. It’s a thoughtful way to kick off the new year while giving back to the community.
Now, what about artificial trees, you ask? Residents are encouraged to consider donating them to local thrift stores or charities. Another friendly option is to post them on social media platforms like Marketplace or in Buy Nothing groups. If you need a convenient way to dispose of them, scheduling a bulk pickup service is also a possibility for those artificial trees.
Expected to be completed by early 2026, this expansion is part of a bigger plan involving a $274 million bond package that voters approved back in May 2023. The expansion will increase the total number of basketball and volleyball courts to eight, accommodating the community’s growing sports needs.
Furthermore, residents can anticipate the completion of the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex by 2027, as this complex will introduce five synthetic fields and one natural grass field to further benefit the local sports community. Currently, the Sports Center offers a whopping 276 hours of playtime each week, but demand has reached a staggering 340 hours of requests. Clearly, these new facilities are going to be welcomed additions!
As the holiday spirit lingers and new facilities rise, it’s an exciting time for both Round Rock and Austin residents. Whether recycling your festive tree or looking forward to enhanced sports facilities, the communities are coming together to create a greener and more active future. So get out there, find your nearest drop-off, and enjoy the benefits of recycling!
