Revitalization and Development Propel Growth in Downtown Taylor

Historic Church Gives Way to New Hotel and Business Expansion

In the heart of Taylor, Texas lies a beacon of the city’s recent development – an old Church built on a century-old establishment on 6th Street. The structure that once stood as the First Presbyterian Church now serves as a testament of the city’s burgeoning progress. The 112-year old building has been transformed into the Talbot Commons Pocket Hotel, the first hotel to grace downtown Taylor in 100 years.

The hotel, an 11-bedroom contactless establishment, represents the first in a series of exciting developments for this small Texas town, especially with the agreement that has welcomed Samsung’s new semiconductor plant to Taylor. “We are not just a day trip away from Austin, Round Rock, or Georgetown,” says Alison Dito, the hotel’s operations manager, “We are becoming an overnight and weekend destination, and we are only just getting started.”

With corporate giants like Samsung creating employment opportunities and boosting sales tax revenue, the city is successfully attracting companies interested in setting up business here. Regina Jo Carlson, Taylor’s Economic Development Corporation Vice President, details the town’s retail and restaurant needs, highlighting the impact of Samsung’s arrival on the city’s revitalization efforts.

A Financial Boon Fuels City’s Growth

As per the city’s agreement with Samsung, Taylor will be receiving a 2% use tax on the sold construction materials for the plant’s construction. About half a cent of this tax will be channelled to fund the infrastructure grants aimed at preserving downtown’s historic buildings and businesses.

Dwayne Ariola, Taylor’s new Mayor, believes that while the city is reaping the benefits of this tax revenue, it must also strike a balance in managing this growth. “We are not just attracting new citizens, we are taking care of those who have been here for generations,” Ariola emphasized.

This revitalization has not only benefited the local economy but also given the city an identity boost. In fact, other companies have shown interest in expanding their businesses to Taylor.

A Growing City with a Promising Future

The city’s growth, however, is not without its challenges. The Mayor acknowledges this, stating, “We must work closely with these companies to ensure they are profitable.” With employment opportunities and business establishments sprouting, it is crucial to strike a balance between economic growth while preserving and promoting the city’s heritage.

The ongoing developments are a sign of the city’s commitment to growth. With strategic plans and careful considerations in place, Taylor is hopeful for what lies ahead. As Mayor Ariola puts it, “We are taking care of our longstanding citizens while warmly welcoming the new ones.”
