Exciting Developments for Georgetown ISD: New High School Plans & Recent Incident Response

In the heart of Georgetown, Texas, Georgetown Independent School District (GISD) is making some thrilling progress as it embarks on plans for its fourth comprehensive high school. This new institution promises a bright future for students in the community, and it’s just a hop, skip, and jump away from becoming a reality!

New High School Construction Begins Soon!

Earlier this year, in March 2025, district officials took a giant leap by approving contracts for the initial construction phases of this much-anticipated high school. Set to be located near D.B. Wood and Cedar Breaks roads in northwest Georgetown, this educational facility is on the fast track to providing ample classroom space for future learners.

The buzz surrounding this project is palpable, with construction expected to kick off in the spring of 2025. Once the builders break ground, the project is estimated to take around 38 months to complete, with the grand opening slated for May 2028. The anticipation is already building for what this new campus will bring!

Funded by a substantial $649 million bond package approved by voters in May 2024, this project is a shining example of community support for educational growth. The new high school is designed to accommodate over 2,200 students, with additional space already set aside for potential future middle and elementary schools. It’s exciting to think about the possibilities for students of all ages!

Mark Your Calendars!

As the project gears up, a groundbreaking ceremony is expected to take place in either March or April 2025. This will be a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate, and witness the start of something great for Georgetown.

Safety First: Incident at Georgetown High School

January 29, 2025, the high school was temporarily closed due to a bomb threat. Thankfully, the swift response of the Georgetown Police Department and school officials ensured that everyone remained safe during the unsettling situation.

The threat was received at 7:08 a.m., prompting an immediate and thorough police response. Evacuations were executed smoothly, with students moved to designated safe locations without any panic. Fortunately, no actual explosives were found on campus; in fact, suspicious items were examined by bomb detection dogs and determined to be harmless!

One item that stirred concern was initially thought to pose a threat but was later identified as a component of a student’s robotics project. After thorough inspections, the Georgetown police declared an “all clear” for the campus by 12:40 p.m.. This timely resolution allowed scheduled events, including the Course Selection Fair, to proceed as planned.

Looking Ahead

In light of this incident, GISD’s leadership is committed to reviewing existing safety protocols to ensure the security of students and staff. The community can feel reassured knowing that their safety is a top priority for everyone involved.

As Georgetown moves forward with exciting new developments for its schools, residents can look forward to a future filled with opportunities for students. With the groundbreaking of the new high school on the horizon and a strong focus on school safety protocols, it’s a great time to be part of this innovative and vibrant community!

Stay tuned for more updates as both the new school and safety procedures continue to evolve!
