Georgetown, Texas – In a stunning display of creativity and school spirit, students at East View High School may have crafted the largest homecoming mum in the world. This ambitious project, celebrating the renowned Texas tradition, has captivated students, staff, and the local community alike.
The initiative to create the giant mum was spearheaded by Renae Bowie, the school’s agricultural education teacher and FFA Advisor. Under her guidance, every class within the school contributed to this remarkable endeavor. “Every single class that I have, including my natural resources class, had a hand in making this,” Bowie explained. The project took nearly a month to complete, allowing students plenty of time to collaborate and showcase their skills.
With the intention of setting a new Guinness World Record, East View High School is challenging the current record held by Lewisville High School in North Texas, which was established in 2023. Bowie emphasized that the Patriots’ mum is nearly double the size of its predecessor, adding to the excitement and anticipation among students and faculty. “There’s so much buy-in,” she noted. “The kids are coming over here, they’re taking pictures, they love it. They love the Patriot pride.”
The homemade mum stands out not only for its size but also for its personal touches. Each student participated by creating unique decorations that represent their identities and interests. According to Bowie, “Each one of my students got the opportunity to make a trinket that was from their heart, or a program that they’re a part of.” These trinkets were then crafted from cardboard and attached to a wide ribbon, showcasing the individuality of each contributor.
Bowie emphasized the significance of this project as a learning experience that extends beyond the academic curriculum. “Even though it is not your average assignment, I hope my students gain something they cannot learn from a textbook,” she said, pointing out the value of teamwork, perseverance, and community pride that has emerged through their efforts.
The homecoming festivities, highlighted by this impressive mum, culminate in a football game against Glenn High School. Scheduled for 7 p.m. on the night of the homecoming celebration, students and community members are eagerly looking forward to rallying together in support of their school. “Anything is possible with the right motivation, with the right plan, with the heart,” Bowie stated, encouraging her students to embrace the spirit of the season.
As East View High School prepares for its homecoming week events, the giant mum stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together. With hopes of breaking a world record and fostering school pride, the students of Georgetown, Texas, have created not just a massive decoration, but a memorable experience for all involved.
