Georgetown Students Aim for Record-Breaking Homecoming Mum

GEORGETOWN, Texas – As homecoming season rolls around in Texas, high school students are pulling out all the stops to celebrate, and one school in Central Texas is making history with their ambitious project. East View High School is on a mission to create what could be the largest homecoming mum in the world, and the community couldn’t be more excited!

A Tradition of Mums

If you’re not familiar with the concept, homecoming mums are a Texas tradition that involves extravagant floral arrangements made from ribbons, flowers, and various embellishments. They are often worn by students during homecoming week as a way of showing school spirit. This year, East View’s students decided to take it to the next level by creating a mum that’s not only enormous but could possibly smash the current Guinness World Record!

The Vision in Action

Under the guidance of Ag Teacher and FFA Advisor Renae Bowie, students transformed their vision into reality. “People are like, ‘Wow, this is amazing. I’ve never seen anything like this,’” Bowie beamed, reflecting on the positive reactions from the community. The mum has become a real centerpiece at East View High School, drawing in students and families alike for photo ops and to admire the creativity.

“Every single class that I have, including my natural resources class, had a hand in making this,” Bowie explained. The project was no small feat; it took nearly a month to complete and involved multiple classes collaborating during each class period. From sewing to crafting, students worked diligently, turning a simple assignment into a chance to make history.

The Record to Beat

This year’s effort is particularly noteworthy as they are attempting to surpass the record set by Lewisville High School in North Texas, who currently holds the title. East View’s mum is nearly double that size, which means it’s going to be a formidable competitor! “There’s so much buy-in,” said Bowie. “The kids are coming over here, they’re taking pictures, they love it. They love the Patriot pride.”

Personal Touches

What makes this mum extra special are the personalized touches contributed by students. Each one had the chance to create their own decorative trinket that reflects their personality, interests, or activities they’re involved in. “They took that inspiration and made it out of cardboard, and we put it on a size 40 ribbon and put it up there,” said Bowie. It’s a fantastic way of integrating personal stories into a project that celebrates teamwork and school spirit.

Hard Work and Heart

In discussing the experience, Bowie emphasized the importance of motivation and hard work. “Anything is possible with the right motivation, with the right plan, with the heart. You have to have the heart to do something. If you want to be great, you have to work hard.” It’s an inspiring reminder that even project-based learning can instill lifelong lessons beyond the confines of a textbook.

Game Day Excitement

All of this creative energy culminates in the homecoming football game, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. against Glenn High School. The students are not just excited about the record attempt; they’re also looking forward to showing off their hard work and spirit during the game.

This homecoming season in Georgetown is indeed one to remember, filled with creativity, pride, and a community coming together for a worthy cause. Here’s to hoping East View High School claims the record and makes their mark in history!
