Georgetown Celebrates the Launch of a Special Children’s Book by Koda, the Education Dog

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Georgetown Fire Department is buzzing with excitement, and it’s all thanks to a furry friend who just published her very own children’s book. Meet Koda, the education dog who has been winning hearts and helping local kids learn about fire safety. This weekend, families from all over the area flocked to Wag Heaven to celebrate Koda’s big accomplishment, and what a wonderful event it was!

A Dream Come True

“To see the book actually in my hands was just so relieving,” said deputy fire marshal Jonathan Gilliam. “It was wonderful. I was so excited.” Gilliam’s journey with Koda began when he noticed how elementary school students lit up while reading to dogs. He thought it’d be a great idea to bring a lovable four-legged friend into his public outreach work. Soon after, he adopted Koda, and the rest is history!

Koda, the Fire Dog

In Koda’s new book, she takes children on her adventures as Georgetown’s beloved fire dog. Gilliam explained that Koda helps ease any fears kids might have when approaching firefighters. “She helps me break down some children that sometimes have difficulties approaching us,” said Gilliam. “She helps us educate them, and then we use her for therapy throughout the community.” It’s heartwarming to see a dog play such a crucial role in bridging gaps between kids and firefighters, making learning fun and safe.

A Collaborative Effort

With the help of talented local illustrator Morgan Smith, Koda’s adventures are beautifully captured on each page of the book. “This one is going to be my favorite because it’s got Koda with the poppy costume in it,” said Smith. “That’s something she’s really worn.” Smith cleverly incorporated iconic Georgetown landmarks into Koda’s story, making it a delightful and unique product that represents the community.

Community Engagement

During the “paw-signing” event at Wag Heaven, families gathered to meet Koda and snag a copy of her first book. Parents like Alisa Rose shared how Koda has positively impacted their children. “Koda came to his school, and so he’s known Koda and he was excited when I showed him that Koda wrote a book,” she said, revealing how her son once had a fear of dogs but now adores them thanks to Koda’s gentle nature.

Supporting Education

Each book is priced at $10, and here’s the best part: all the proceeds go right back into public education! “We’re really excited about what she’s able to offer the community,” said Jeff Manley, co-owner of Wag Heaven. “What a great way to teach kids fire safety.” It’s a win-win situation where kids learn important lessons while also supporting their local schools.

What’s Next for Koda?

But wait, there’s more! Koda has plans for future books that will teach kids even more about safety, including topics like calling 911 and the importance of “stop, drop, and roll.” “Just talking about Koda joining the department and teaching children to dream big,” mentioned Gilliam. “They can do anything they want as long as they work hard and dream big.” Isn’t that an inspiring message for our youngsters?
