In a highly anticipated matchup on February 15, 2025, the Georgia Southwestern women’s basketball team faced off against the Augusta Jaguars at the Storm Dome in Americus, GA. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, it was a challenging game, and they fell to the Jaguars with a final score of 74-61. This defeat marked a setback for Georgia Southwestern, pushing their overall record to 11-10 and their Peach Belt Conference record to 7-6.
As the game unfolded, Augusta showcased their determination, especially in the second half. Although Georgia Southwestern began strong, leading the scoring at 20-17 after the first quarter, things took a turn. The Jaguars managed to pull ahead, demonstrating excellent offensive play mixed with strong defensive efforts that kept the Hurricanes in check. Augusta outscored Georgia Southwestern in the second half, holding them to only 28 points across those critical minutes.
Augusta’s shooting percentage was remarkable, with a field goal percentage of 52%, and they were particularly lethal from beyond the arc, boasting a 55.6% success rate on three-point attempts. To top it off, they showed strength at the charity stripe with an impressive 85% of free throws sinking in. The Jaguars’ ability to capitalize on turnovers also played a crucial role; they forced 20 turnovers from the Hurricanes, translating those mistakes into a staggering 23 points for themselves.
Quinasia Abercrombie emerged as a significant player for Augusta, leading the team with 18 points on an excellent shooting night, hitting 8-of-11 shots, while also grabbing six rebounds and adding four steals to her impressive stat line. Mone Florence contributed significantly as well, scoring 16 points and securing three rebounds while also netting six crucial free throws when it mattered most. Amari Jackson and Yamani Paul chipped in with nine and eleven points respectively, a solid contribution that bolstered the team’s efforts.
Additionally, players Tyasia Freeman and Sierra Burns were key contributors too, each scoring seven points. Notably, Burns nailed a critical three-pointer in the fourth quarter, further igniting Augusta’s campaign to secure the win.
For Georgia Southwestern, this loss will undoubtedly serve as motivation as they regroup and focus on improving their strategy in upcoming games. Although the Hurricanes had an overall field-goal percentage of 44.7%, they struggled with three-point shooting, managing only a 11.1% success rate in that category which undoubtedly contributed to the game’s outcome. Their free-throw shooting, at 81.8%, showed promise and will be a positive they can build on for future games.
