Georgetown, Texas, is a “Home Rule” municipality. Georgetown’s first “Home Rule” Charter was approved on April 24, 1970, and it was revised in 1979, 1986, 1988, and 1994. Georgetown is governed by a council-manager system, as stipulated by its charter. The City Council, in this system of government, provides leadership by determining the City’s goals and policies. The City Council hires a City Manager to help the council achieve its goals. The manager is in charge of the city’s day-to-day operations as well as enforcing Council-approved laws and ordinances.The City Council is made up of eight members, including a mayor who is elected at large and seven council members who are chosen from single-member districts. The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council to offer legal services to the City of Georgetown, which include contract evaluation, representation in City legal matters, and legal advice to City personnel and the Council. City Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 808 Martin Luther King, Jr. Street, near Georgetown’s historic plaza and two blocks west of the Public Library. New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Martin Luther King Day, Thanksgiving and the next Friday, and Christmas Day and the following Day are all days when City Hall is closed.
