In the charming city of Round Rock, Texas, a sea of American flags stretches across Yonders Point at Old Settlers Park. As September 11 approaches, the display serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost on that fateful day and in the years of combat that followed. A Labor of Love
This moving tribute wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of volunteers like Angela Withrow, who helped set up the memorial. “It’s not just a flag,” Angela shared with a heartfelt smile. “It’s a reminder that there were people who wore those shoes, who fought for our country, and gave their life. We’re here to remember them.” Her passion is evident as she takes pride in the work done to honor these brave souls.
Finding Meaning Through Loss
Bobby Withrow, the founder of the Texas Fallen Project Inc., discusses the depth of the project. “We started by placing a flag for each of the fallen from 9/11, which amounts to 2,978 people,” he explains. “On top of that, we’ve lost around 800 Texans in combat since then, so we thought 4,000 flags would be a fitting way to commemorate these heroes.” Bobby has passionately spearheaded this initiative for several years, reminding the community of the sacrifice made by our service members, some of whom never returned home.
A Family Affair
Families are joining in the remembrance too. Debbie Sullivan visited the memorial with her husband and young grandson. As she gazed upon the flags, she reflected, “We have kids now who were born after all of this happened and they don’t even know the extent of what our country went through. This day was so somber, and to memorialize it like this is beautiful.”
A Lesson from the Past
As visitors stroll through the flags, the display is a powerful visual reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women in uniform. Bobby Withrow emphasizes the importance of these memories: “If we forget it, we’re doomed to repeat it. We want to remember and do our part to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.”
