The small city of Taylor, Texas, located about 35 miles northeast of Austin and home to a population of roughly 17,300, has announced plans to recommence operations in one of its significant landmarks. The Howard Theatre, an opulent community icon that unveiled its grandeur approximately 100 years ago, is slated to reopen soon. This beloved movie theater that has remained inactive since 2021, is all set to experience a fresh wind of life.
As Taylor gears up for the official opening of the Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.’s factory, several revival steps have been employed to provide the city’s downtown a much-needed boost. The city’s economic development agency, the Taylor Economic Development Corp, has approved up to $70,000 in grants aimed for the expansion of an existing business and to breathe new life into the long-deserted theater.
The upcoming reclamation project benefits two significant areas in the city. Alongside the theater’s transformation, the funds will also assist the expansion of Jeff’s Resurrections LLC, a locally treasured business. Operating at 106 Porter St. for over 30 years, this dedicated outfit has been instrumental in breathing life back into vintage and classic automobiles.
These financial allotments follow upon successful completion of other restoration efforts in the city, such as the McCrory Timmerman and Titsworth buildings’ refurbishment, thereby sparking a new wave of optimism for the city’s revitalization efforts.
The funding pledges to not only refurbish the daunting edifice of the Howard Theatre but also aims to re-create the unique charm that the theater was traditionally known for. Once a popular hub of activity, the theater’s restoration plan seeks to rekindle the buzz, ensuring that downtown Taylor continues to flourish while preserving its unique appeal.
Progressive projects such as these are set to reap substantial benefits for the city’s local economy. Aside from rejuvenating the city center with a refurbished theater and an expanded vintage car restoration unit, the town’s revitalization plans also include creating space for several other economic activities. The prospects of retail shops, hotels, apartments, and more are expected to provide a considerable uplift to the city’s cultural and economic life, gradually attracting more residents and visitors alike.
Taylor’s attempt to maintain its essence whilst inspiring economic growth serves as a testament to its dedication to community development, as well as economic stability. With the reopening of the historic Howard Theatre and the expansion of Jeff’s Resurrections, Taylor finds itself on a promising path to revitalization and growth.
