July 4 Holiday Safety Measures on the Water
It was a busy 4th of July holiday for many Texans as they soaked up the sun and enjoyed the waters. However, Lake Austin was notably void of personal watercraft such as jet skis, wet bikes, and motorized surfboards. A ban was imposed beginning at sunset on Wednesday and is lasting until sunrise on Friday.
“There’s a lot of people out for the holiday, so it makes sense, I suppose,” reported local boater Garrison Boykin. The inclusive ban applies only to Lake Austin and is imposed annually for the safety of the masses that swarm to the lake during the 4th of July holiday.
Personal Watercraft Ban Enforcement
The Austin Police Department Lake Patrol Unit was highly visible at the Loop 360 Boat Ramp on Lake Austin, preventing enthusiasts of personal watercraft from entering the water. Water vessels like boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes were permitted on the lake.
“As long as people are being cautious, that’s the utmost prerogative, so whatever that encompasses,” said Boykin. “If that suggests banning jet skis, then it has to be it. But, other than that, I believe they should be permissible out here.”
Keeping Lake Austin Clean and Enjoyable
Raul Valdez, who was seen readying his paddleboard on the lake, sees the ban as a beneficial policy to preserve the lake’s cleanliness and allow a peaceful experience for boating and swimming. “The ban makes it less challenging for locals to relish their typical activities,” added Valdez.
Valdez also commented, “I have perceived that a lot of the lake water has been contaminated recently. I am not certain if it might have to do with the removal of the trash boats, perhaps, but I think the city administration should intervene.”
Annual Ban for Overall Safety
The Austin Police Department (APD) insist the yearly prohibition is necessary for everyone’s safety as the volume of users generally surge on Lake Austin during the Independence Day holiday.
