GEORGETOWN, Texas – It’s that time of year again when high school students gear up for football, fun, and of course, homecoming traditions. But this year, East View High School has taken a bold step towards something truly special. The students are setting their sights on creating the largest homecoming mum in the world! Yes, you read that right!
After hearing about the previous record held by Lewisville High School in North Texas, East View’s students decided that they wanted to make history. Under the guidance of Renae Bowie, the Ag Teacher and FFA Advisor, the dream of a hand-made mum started to take form. “Every single class that I have, including my natural resources class, had a hand in making this,” Bowie explained, clearly proud of her students’ dedication and collaborative efforts.
The mum isn’t just big; it’s a true labor of love. It took nearly a month to complete, with students spending countless hours sewing satin ribbons and designing personalized decorations. Each student created their own unique trinket, reflecting something dear to their hearts or connected to clubs and programs they’re part of. “They took that inspiration, and they made it out of cardboard, and we put it on a size 40 ribbon and put it up there,” Bowie added enthusiastically.
Bowie expressed the strong sense of community and pride surrounding the project. “There’s so much buy-in,” she noted. Students have been flocking to the entryway of the school to take pictures with the enormous mum, which seems to be evoking a palpable sense of patriotism. “They love the Patriot pride,” said Bowie, referring to East View’s school mascot.
Despite the scale of the project, the students relished the challenge. Bowie believes that this experience offers lessons that go beyond what textbooks can teach. “Anything is possible with the right motivation, with the right plan, with the heart,” she said. “You have to have the heart to do something. If you want to be great, you have to work hard.”
As homecoming week approaches, the excitement is building. The homecoming football game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. against Glenn High School, promises to be a thrilling event. Attendees can expect to see the massive mum showcased alongside school spirit activities throughout the week.
As the East View Patriots gear up for their big moment, they not only aim to break a world record but also to create lasting memories that will be cherished long after high school days are gone. The effort and teamwork put into crafting this stunning homecoming mum truly embody the essence of student spirit and innovation found at East View High School.
So, if you’re in Georgetown, be sure to check out this magnificent mum and cheer on the Patriots as they make history! With community backing and student determination, we’re excited to see if they can claim the title of the world’s largest homecoming mum.
