Firefighters from Liberty Hill, as well as nearby Leander and Georgetown, responded swiftly when the fire was reported just after midnight. Initially thought to be a minor dumpster fire, the flames quickly spread to engulf the entire building, shocking everyone in the area.

During the battle against the blaze, a staggering 100,000 gallons of water were used to bring the flames under control, highlighting the intensity of the situation. Firefighters had to act quickly to protect surrounding structures, which was no easy task given the wood construction of the market. Thankfully, the Liberty Hill Community Outreach Center, located nearby, sustained only some water damage and was saved from destruction.

A Community Response

As part of the firefighting efforts, local residents Don and Kathy Brann, who lived nearby, were evacuated from their home for safety but returned just before dawn as the situation stabilized.

Fire Chief George Sybert recognized the scale of the fire and called in the Georgetown Quint truck to assist from above, which utilized an additional 37,000 gallons of water in the effort to douse the flames. Once the fire was finally extinguished, the team was assisted by a crew from Williamson County Road and Bridge to tackle the tricky areas that still posed risks by helping to pull down unstable walls.

While firefighters were engaged in combatting the flames, local volunteers had to multitask, responding to another fire breaking out on Blessing Ranch Road. This quick and responsive community spirit demonstrated how Liberty Hill came together in times of crisis.

Location of the Fire and its Aftermath

The cause of the Liberty Food Market fire remains under investigation to this day, leaving many questions unanswered. At the time of the incident, the building was owned by Terry DeLooze of Austin, and it served as an essential part of the town’s pulse. Residents were reminded that there was a burn ban in place across Williamson County at the time of the fire, which emphasized the need for care and caution in outdoor activities.

The fallout from this tragic event was reported in a special edition of a local newspaper, with coverage prepared by the fire chief’s wife and her husband. This incident not only changed the landscape of Liberty Hill but also served as a reminder of the fragility of local history.
