As the holiday spirit begins to blossom, one local resident is making sure that no family in Pflugerville goes without the joy of celebrating Christmas. Melissa Frederick, a passionate advocate for holiday cheer, has transformed her home into a winter wonderland filled with decorations and Christmas trees. Her nonprofit organization, Giving Christmas Spirit, is on a heartwarming mission to provide holiday joy to families in need.
Tragedy struck last year for Frederick when her father passed away just before Thanksgiving. However, amidst her sorrow, she found inspiration. With her inheritance, she decided to fulfill a lifelong dream of her parents: starting a nonprofit. “So many families out there are unable to purchase Christmas trees or ornaments or any kind of house decorations, and they deserve the right to celebrate like everybody else,” Frederick shared.
What began as a small initiative to help just a dozen families has now blossomed into a much larger operation. This year, Giving Christmas Spirit aims to serve 150 families across Central Texas, a testament to Frederick’s determination and the community’s support. The big giveaway event is set for Saturday, December 14, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Baca Community Center in Round Rock. Families can look forward to receiving Christmas trees, ornaments, and charming decorations while participating in lively activities like spin-the-wheel games and visits from fire trucks!
Frederick’s mission is about more than just dolling out decorations; it’s about creating lasting memories. “It’s not just about handing out decorations. I want them actually to be able to make memories,” she said, emphasizing the importance of family traditions during the holiday season.
The nonprofit is currently seeking volunteers for both the preparation day on Friday, December 13 and the giveaway day on Saturday. Prep day includes unloading and organizing all the festive decorations. Volunteers on giveaway day will assist families in selecting their holiday items. If you’re looking to spread some cheer and lend a hand, this is a perfect opportunity!
With an eye toward the future, Frederick hopes to double the number of families served next year. “It will require even more donations, volunteers, and resources,” she acknowledged, knowing just how essential community support is for her vision to flourish.
