The aim was to establish a facility that would not only serve as a headquarters but also an integration center solely dedicated to the production of the company’s unique REEcorners™ and modular platforms for electric vehicles. The proposed facility spanned nearly 120,000 square feet and was slated to be located in the One Thirty Business Park at Pecan and SH130. It felt like the city was on the verge of becoming a front-runner in the electric vehicle manufacturing sector.

Financial Plans and Promises

As part of this agreement, Pflugerville was prepared to offer up to $1 million in grants, depending on REE’s investment of $24.75 million over the course of eight years. The financial backing was designed to help with lease costs and cover essential capital expenditures. To sweeten the deal, the project also came with an employment promise that required at least 125 full-time jobs to be created within that eight-year timeframe.

A Bright Future—Or Not?

Leaders from the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation (PCDC) were very optimistic about the project. They foresaw the establishment of REE Automotive as a move that would elevate the Austin region’s reputation as an electric vehicle manufacturing powerhouse, which is no small feat considering the growing demand for EVs across North America.

Additionally, PCDC had plans to assist REE in snagging skill development funds and workforce grants aimed at supporting community training for those looking to dive into the electric vehicle components market. All signs pointed to a promising future filled with new opportunities.

However, the bubble has now burst, as REE Automotive has put the brakes on its plans. The decision to backtrack is certainly a disappointment for local officials and community members who were looking forward to the benefits such a large-scale project would bring. With the pace of economic growth and technology development, it’s not unusual for companies to shift gears, but this abrupt change was unexpected.

While it’s unclear what led REE to cancel their plans, the implications are now starting to ripple through the community.
