Williamson County Celebrates the Historic Landmark

Round Rock, TX – Delving into the past, on June 6, 2024, residents of Williamson County celebrated a carefully woven thread of their past with a grand unveiling. Kenney Fort, a significant landmark in the local history of the region, was honored with a new historical marker in a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Round Rock Preservation.

History Revived

Founded in the era of the Republic of Texas, Kenney Fort holds the proud distinction of being the first pioneer settlement in what is modern day Williamson County. Despite its vital role in the history of the area, the fort was abandoned in the mid-1800s, fading slowly into obscurity until it disappeared entirely by the 1930s. The newly installed marker, sponsored by the Round Rock Preservation, stands a silent sentinel to the fort’s original location.

An existing state marker was also erected in 1936 for the Texas Centennial celebration, found over on Palm Valley Boulevard, but this new addition stands as a fresh testament to local memory, reaffirming the fort’s historical significance.

A Momentous Occasion

In an ongoing attempt to connect the present to the past, the Round Rock Preservation will be hosting a free history session at the Round Rock Library. Slated for Saturday, July 13th, at 2pm, avid historian Frank Darr will be throwing light on the fascinating stories and events of Kenney Fort.

Keeping History Alive with Round Rock Preservation

Operating as a nonprofit, the Round Rock Preservation’s agenda runs to protecting, preserving, and supporting historical heritage within the City of Round Rock. Since its formation on April 5, 2016, it has acted as the city’s historical guardian, intervening to save significant landmarks like the Round Rock Stagecoach Inn from demolition.

All operations of the organization, inclusive of their various preservation projects and educational initiatives about Round Rock’s historic sites and structures, are powered by memberships, donations, and volunteer efforts. The Board of Directors comprises dedicated volunteers with a shared interest in the city’s historical heritage.
