Concern and Unease Amid 4th of July Celebrations in Round Rock After Recent Mass Shooting

In the wake of a fatal mass shooting just two weeks ago, the city of Round Rock, Texas is preparing to host its annual Frontier Days celebration at the very same venue – Old Settler’s Park, on the Fourth of July. An event scheduled to feature live music, games, contests, and free fireworks, has become the root of anxiety for residents of the city.

Round Rock: A City on Edge

The sense of unease among the local populace is palpable. The mass shooting, which took place during the city’s annual Juneteenth festival on June 15 at Old Settler’s Park, resulted in two deaths and wounded 14. The tragedy is still fresh in the minds of Round Rock residents, with many, like local grandmother Clara Anthony choosing to skip this year’s Independence day fireworks. “I’m going to wait this one out,” said Anthony.

A Glimpse into the Tragic Incident

A dispute between two groups at the Juneteenth celebration spiraled into a deadly encounter. The unfortunate incident led to the deaths of two women, along with injuries sustained by 14 other attendees. Ricky Thompson, a 17-year-old from Manor, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. A few days later, an additional juvenile male suspect was also taken into custody.

Impact on the Community

While some community members live in fear, certain individuals like Frank Manglona, refuse to let the violent incidents affect their lives. Aware of the potential for violent crime anywhere, Manglona expressed his dismay at the occurrence of such a violent event at a location meant for community enjoyment. He said, “There’s going to be a lot of people on edge,” confirming that the effects of the crime are still lingering. However, Manglona is also firm in his decision to keep his tradition of watching the free fireworks at the park. “It doesn’t scare me off from coming out and enjoying the beautiful park here in Round Rock,” Manglona said.

Criticism and Police Response

Some residents criticized the police for inadequate security at the Juneteenth celebration. It remains unclear how law enforcement agencies plan to handle the security detail for the Fourth of July party. However, as of now, the celebration is set to proceed as planned.

This 4th of July will, no doubt, be a difficult time for Round Rock—a symbol of the resilience of its residents. While the city celebrates its independence, it will, undoubtedly, still be mourning the tragedy that unfolded just weeks prior.

The search for normalcy continues amidst the anticipation of the Independence Day celebrations—a day known for joy and solidarity now overshadowed with apprehension and sorrow. Round Rock stands strong as the local community hopes to rise above the tragedy, bearing witness to the strength and unity that defines them.
