Standouts included Autumn Phillips and Mone Florence, who contributed significantly to the team’s effort. Moving forward, the Jaguars aim to rebound against Georgia College next week, maintaining hope for the remainder of the season.
In a nail-biting contest that left fans on the edge of their seats, the Southwestern University Women’s Basketball Team faced off against the No. 7 ranked North Georgia at the UNG Convocation Center in Dahlonega, GA. The final score was a heartbreaking 71-70 in favor of North Georgia, marking yet another thrilling chapter in the Jaguars’ season.
From the tip-off, it was evident that this game would be an exhilarating one, with lead changes happening frequently. North Georgia surged ahead in the first quarter, establishing an early advantage of 23-14, which had many fans wondering if the Jaguars could recover. But as the team regroups and strategized, we saw a real spark during the second quarter when they poured in 18 points, closing the gap at halftime to a mere 40-32.
The second half saw the intensity ramp up as both teams fought tooth and nail for every point. The Jaguars decisively outscored North Georgia 14-13 in the third quarter, maintaining the momentum and confidence they built in the second. With every possession, Jaguars supporters could feel the tension and excitement rising in the arena.
As the final quarter kicked off, the stakes were higher than ever. With less than three minutes left to play, the Jaguars found themselves trailing by five points — but the team’s determination shone through. Quinasia Abercrombie made a crucial layup, and shortly after, Mone Florence hit a phenomenal three-pointer, flipping the script and putting Augusta ahead 67-66 with just 50 seconds left on the clock.
It was anyone’s game at this point. Just when you thought the Jaguars were in the clear, North Georgia snatched the lead back with a jumper. However, the Jaguars weren’t backing down. Abercrombie’s free throws tied the game at 69-69 with only 12 seconds to go. Going into the final moments, the tension was palpable; both teams desperately clawed for victory.
As the clock wound down, North Georgia managed a last-second layup to seal the game, while Augusta’s final shot attempt missed just as time expired. The crowd was left to process the heat of the action that had unfolded before their eyes; it was a game for the history books!
Despite the loss, there were several standout performances from the Jaguars. Autumn Phillips delivered an impressive 18 points, along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists, showing her prowess on the court. Mone Florence made her mark too, scoring 12 points and grabbing 4 rebounds, with the highlight of her performance being three successful three-pointers.
Abercrombie was a force, achieving a double-double with 11 points and an impressive 10 rebounds. Yamani Paul contributed significantly off the bench with 10 points and 6 rebounds, while teammate Elyse Autrey added valuable points with her two three-pointers. The bench was buzzing as they collectively outscored North Georgia 24-8.
Despite this tough loss, the Jaguars hold a decent record of 10-5 overall and 4-3 in Peach Belt Conference play. They demonstrated skill, tenacity, and heart throughout the game. Next up, Augusta will be looking to bounce back as they prepare to take on Georgia College on January 29 at 5:30 p.m. at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
