Thousand Oaks, California, was buzzing with excitement as the No. 5 Texas Men’s Golf team pulled off a remarkable win at the Southwestern Invitational held at the stunning Sherwood Country Club. With a solid performance in the final round, the Longhorns clinched the title, and fans couldn’t be more thrilled!
On the final day of the tournament, the Texas team came in hot, carding an impressive 6-under-par 278 round. This push allowed them to finish the tournament with a total score of 8-under 844 (289-277-278), sealing the victory by just one stroke over their closest competitors. The Longhorns had started the day trailing by two strokes, tied for second place, but they turned up the heat when it mattered most.
Finishing just behind the Longhorns was San Diego State, which wrapped up the tournament with a commendable score of 7-under 845 (276-290-279). The third spot went to No. 15 Vanderbilt, finishing with 4-under 848 (282-287-279). This tournament featured a solid lineup, boasting a 14-team field, including seven teams ranked highly as of Nov. 13.
Freshman standout Daniel Bennett was a crucial player for Texas, delivering a blistering 4-under 67 in the final round. His total score of 4-under 209 (72-70-67) earned him a tie for second in the individual rankings. Alongside him, junior Tommy Morrison also shone with a stellar 4-under 67 of his own. Meanwhile, junior Luke Potter maintained consistency with even-par 71, and junior Christiaan Maas posted a 2-over 73.
Taking the individual title was Vanderbilt’s Wells Williams, who racked up a three-round total of 5-under 208 (68-71-69). Daniel Bennett was in a tight race for the top, finishing just a single stroke behind, sharing the spotlight with Justin Hastings from San Diego State and Florida’s Ian Gilligan, all tied for second place.
The Texas Men’s Golf team has their sights set on their next challenge: the Amer Ari Invitational in Waimea, Hawaii, scheduled from February 6-8, 2025. With the momentum from this victory, they are sure to carry the spirit and energy into the next tournament.
