The political landscape has become increasingly heated following an incident at the Arlington National Cemetery involving former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Kamala Harris. The event, which took place earlier this week, has ignited a passionate debate, particularly among families of service members who lost their lives in Afghanistan.
On August 26, 2021, a tragic suicide bombing perpetrated by ISIS-K resulted in the deaths of U.S. service members during the hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan. As part of commemorative activities, Trump visited the iconic cemetery to honor these fallen heroes. However, his presence drew criticism from Harris, who labeled the visit as a “political stunt.”
Harris remarked that Arlington is a sacred place and criticized Trump’s team for allegedly filming a video at the site. “It is not a place for politics,” she stated. An altercation reportedly occurred when cemetery staff felt “abruptly pushed aside” while interacting with Trump’s aides.
In response to Harris’s comments, several Gold Star family members shared their stories through videos on Trump’s social media pages. They voiced their frustration over Harris’s critique, arguing that Trump’s visit was meaningful and respectful. Mark Schmitz, the father of Marine Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz, termed Harris’s statement as “heinous, vile, and disgusting.” Mark emphasized that they had requested Trump’s presence to honor their children, not to aid in his campaign.
“Why did we want Trump there? It wasn’t to help his political campaign,” he expressed in one of the videos. Schmitz’s remarks highlighted how families sought a leader who recognizes their sacrifice rather than engaging in political games.
Another Gold Star parent, Darren Hoover, echoed similar sentiments, asserting that Harris displayed a lack of “empathy” and basic understanding of the event. Hoover pointed out that Trump’s visit was in keeping with the deep respect the families have for the military personnel buried there. “In keeping with the reverence and respect that is given to all members of our military, we invited President Trump,” he stated.
Hoover emphasized he was proud to have Trump at the ceremony, asserting that he and other families wanted the former president to capture photographs and videos during the visit. In an emotional appeal, he also called out Harris for accusing Trump of politicizing a solemn occasion. “You should be ashamed and embarrassed about your lack of empathy,” he urged, accusing her of caring more about power than the well-being of service members and their families.
The fallout from this incident is likely to continue as both sides articulate their views. The exchange of harsh words and allegations reflects broader tensions in the current political climate, especially as the country approaches an election year. As the situation unfolds, families impacted by the loss of loved ones remain at the forefront, urging a respectful and honorable tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
