In a recent surprising revelation, Former President Donald Trump made an unexpected comparison about his possible Vice Presidential (VP) pick. During a discussion on his running mate shortlist, he likened one of the lead contenders to a “young Abraham Lincoln.”
The comment came during a recent interview with a television host when Trump was asked about an article stating the possible hindrance in the selection of Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate due to Trump’s presumed distaste for facial hair. In response to this, Trump exclaimed, “No. I’ve never heard that one…He looks good…He looks like a young Abraham Lincoln.”
Serving as the first-term senator and gaining traction within the party, JD Vance is considered by top GOP strategists as a viable choice to attract traditional working-class Democrat votes in various battleground states.
Along with Vance, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and Florida Senator Marco Rubio are rumored to be among the top choices for Trump’s potential VP pick. While Trump’s final choice remains undisclosed, he has hinted that the announcement could be made “a little before” the upcoming Republican National Convention.
“It could even be during the convention that we’d do it,” he added, indicating that the timing might become “a little complicated.”
Trump is scheduled to host a rally near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, near the Ohio border, but there is no current information on whether Vance will accompany him.
The process of selecting a Vice Presidential candidate tends to be strategic and is subjected to multiple considerations, including potential candidate’s ability to balance the ticket, boost the campaign, and govern if necessary. It’s not uncommon for former presidents and candidates to have specific preferences or peculiar considerations while making this crucial decision.
The comment about viewing Vance as a ‘young Abraham Lincoln’ is unmatchable to any known standard considerations in picking a Vice President. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, is heralded as one of the country’s greatest leaders and is highly regarded for his role in preserving the Union during the Civil War and emancipating enslaved peoples.
Whether Trump’s favorable comparison of Vance to Lincoln indicates his final choice remains to be seen, however, it surely adds an intriguing twist to the ongoing speculation over his VP pick.
