The Vandegrift High School percussion ensemble performed at the 2024 Midwest Clinic in Chicago, showcasing their talent with world premieres and a tribute piece. Their stellar performance and cultural experiences reflect their dedication to music and community spirit.
In the vibrant city of Chicago, the Vandegrift High School percussion ensemble recently turned heads at the prestigious 2024 Midwest Clinic International Band, Orchestra, and Music Conference. This annual event, which has been bringing together music lovers since 1946, is known as the world’s largest band and orchestra conference. It’s a gathering where the best of the best come to showcase their talents—and this year was no exception!
For any high school music program, receiving an invitation to perform at the Midwest Clinic is a monumental achievement. The Vandegrift ensemble secured their spot after a challenging application process that required them to submit recordings, videos, and references nearly a year in advance. Their hard work clearly paid off, as they took the stage to demonstrate not just their technical brilliance but also their creative flair, solidifying their status as one of the top percussion groups in the nation.
During their electrifying performance, the ensemble dazzled audiences with a selection of eight musical pieces, three of which were world premieres. One particularly poignant piece was “Valor Day,” crafted in honor of Lt. Matthew Vandegrift—the school’s namesake who lost his life as a Marine officer in Iraq in 2008. This tribute added an emotional layer to their performance that resonated deeply with the audience.
The show concluded with “Thy Kingdom Come,” a captivating composition that featured handbells and intricate rhythms. It was a fitting finale that left many in the crowd teary-eyed and resulted in a heartfelt standing ovation. The performance truly showcased the dedication of not just the students, but the entire community backing them, which did not go unnoticed.
The trip to Chicago wasn’t just about the music; it was also a chance for students to explore the Windy City. Over the course of three days, they visited iconic sights like the Willis Tower and the Museum of Science and Industry, and even caught a performance of Les Misérables. This combination of culture and artistry certainly provided them with unforgettable memories.
Moreover, the students interacted with esteemed musicians and educators at the clinic, gathering inspiration and insights that will enrich their craft for years to come. This marked the second appearance of Vandegrift’s percussion ensemble at the Midwest Clinic, their first coming back in 2017.
Vandegrift’s band program has a notable history, having claimed multiple accolades over the years. They were state champions in 2014, 2022, and 2023, and even won the 2019 Bands of America Grand National Championships. More recently, the percussion ensemble earned Grand Champion honors at the Thunder in the Hills Percussion Invitational. Under the direction of dedicated faculty, the program not only emphasizes musical excellence but also instills qualities such as work ethic and character that students carry into every facet of their lives.
Upon returning to Austin, the students didn’t just rest on their laurels. They jumped right back into supporting their fellow Vandegrift Vipers by attending the UIL 6A Division II state championship game, contributing to the team securing its first football state title. This sense of community spirit showcases how well-rounded these young talents are, balancing their artistic pursuits with athletic support.
Coach and Athletic Director Drew Sanders shared how proud he is of the students, noting their dedication not only to their musical achievements but also to their dedication to the community. With such exemplary discipline and work ethic, Vandegrift High School’s ensemble continues to inspire students and audiences alike.
As they move forward, there’s no telling how far these talented students will go. One thing is for sure: the rhythm of success is alive and well at Vandegrift High School!
