When egg prices began their steep ascent back in October, rising from $35 to a whopping $130 for a case of 180 eggs, it marked an eye-watering 271% increase. This drastic spike means that what used to cost between $0.19 and $0.20 per egg has ballooned to around $0.72. Such a hefty jump creates significant strain on day-to-day operations.

As egg prices make “breakfast for dinner” feel like a luxury, many residents are turning to an age-old solution: raising their own chickens. In fact, Belton Feed Country Supply Store has seen a noticeable surge in people seeking baby chicks. The lead clerk reported that special breeds are particularly trending, with new shipments coming in twice a week. As interest in backyard poultry rises, the City of Belton has stepped in to remind aspiring chicken owners about local regulations related to chicken coops.
Restaurants aren’t alone in feeling the pinch. Down the street at Mexicano Grille and World Cup Café, the ripple effects of this uptick in egg prices are also felt. Mexicano Grille has already raised its prices to cope with the increased cost of ingredients. Meanwhile, the manager of World Cup Café noted that the cost for their egg supply has nearly doubled from $30 for 18 dozen to $65, causing them to reevaluate their menu offerings.
The entire supply shortage is largely attributed to the recent outbreaks of avian flu that have hit the egg-laying bird population hard. With fewer birds available for egg production, the supply has tightened considerably, leaving restaurants scrambling for alternatives while maintaining their usual menu items.

With grocery store prices soaring, Karebear’s Cluckery has found itself with eager customers looking for affordable eggs. Interestingly, the owner has not raised prices, opting to sell a dozen eggs for just $5, maintaining strong ties with the community while keeping things affordable.

Many are hopeful that as supply chains stabilize and egg production improves, prices will begin to level off.
